On the surface, a high-flying professional has it all: impressive job titles, respected personalities, and careers that many aspire to. Majority are leaders, innovators, and high achievers at various levels, yet beneath the polished exterior, many of these professionals quietly wrestle with a persistent and unsettling belief: “I don’t belong here.” This is imposter syndrome! It is a psychological issue where a person doubts their accomplishments and fears being exposed as a fraud, despite evidence of their competence. There’s always a renewed sense of self-doubt with every new level of success. Instead of celebrating milestones, they attribute success to luck, timing, or external factors. Praise feels misplaced and every achievement is followed by a quiet question: “What if they realise, I’m not as capable as they think?”
The common traits that fuels imposter syndrome is perfectionism, self-awareness, overachievement and need for external validation.
Imposter syndrome remains invisible to others but has a deeply personal impact resulting in chronic stress, burnout, avoidance of opportunities, overworkingand emotional exhaustion.
These thoughts are rarely spoken aloud, yet they shape the person’s behaviour, decision-making, and confidence over time. Imposter syndrome thrives in silence but weakens in awareness.
